PHILLPPINE COMBATIVES™ CURRICULLUM
Q: What is the Philippine Combatives™ curriculum all about?

A: The Philippine Combatives™ curriculum is a a complete martial arts self-defense program that consists of Single Stick, Double Sticks, Knife and Empty Hand Techniques. It is one of the most practical martial arts systems in the world. Since the focus of our curriculum is base on practicality of fighting and not sports, a Philippine Combatives™ practitioner is just like what the elders say about the Filipino Martial Arts in general "It's just like the stick he holds, simple yet deadly!" More on this at about us/Philippine Combatives™.

Q: Is the curriculum just all about Filipino weaponry?

A: Yes but although the section may focus more on the main topics on Single Stick Fighting, Double Stick Fighting & Knife Fighting, they are easily translated to an empty hand empty self-defense maneuvers. This is one of the biggest with the Philippine Combatives™ system; the techniques we do with the weapons we study are also converted into empty hand techniques!

Q: What are the sections included in the Philippine Combatives™ Official Curriculum?

A: There are 9 sections in the Philippine Combatives™. They are Double Stick Fighting Section A, B & C, Single Stick Fighting Section A, B & C and knife Fighting Section A, B & C. Each section focuses on different things. Level One (Double Stick Fighting Section A) for example focuses on double stick fighting footwork, body positioning, coordination drills and more. Utilizing two sticks and using them in fighting in a far and closed range are not that easy. The fighting system in this section focus more in the open position instead of the close stick handling position. Fighting and utilizing a pocket knife in self-defense from unarmed assailant covered in Knife Fighting Section A is not the same as utilizing a regular knife against an armed assailant with a knife which are covered in the other sections.

Q: Does Philippine Combatives™ include ground-fighting techniques?

A: Yes. But the focus of training is not to grapple, score a point and submit an opponent. The goal for the Philippine Combatives™ fighter is to do whatever is necessary to survive by utilizing your weapon if you have it or depending from it when you end up on the ground with an assailant armed with a knife! This part of our curriculum is mostly done in seminar settings and sometimes given as a bonus lesson for the members.

Q: Why does Filipino Martial Arts mostly use Sticks & Knife? Instead of other weapons?

A: There are historical and cultural reasons behind this. For now, consider them the most practical weapons you can actually use and can easily transport. Stick resembles an umbrella, a club, a pen. a baseball bat, newspaper (as seen on Bourne Identity) or walking cane ( which you can even pass through the airport security). The knife is also something most people carry ( pocket or utility knife) and is considered one of the most dangerous concealed weapons of the 21st century! The scary part is that mos people are still legally allowed to carry a pocket knife in different countries including the USA.

Learning to use these weapons properly ( f you carry them) BUT most IMPORTANTLY learning how to depend from them is definitely a must! if you truly want to study a complete Self-Protection program, you will need to include this as part of your training.

Q: What is the difference with this style compare to other Filipino Martial Arts Program?

A: Philippine Martial Arts is a very unique art. Despite it's uniqueness and different styles, most of the things will be the same when it comes to techniques and execution. Some system may focus more one single sticks, while others on double sticks, some may do sword fighting classically while other systems may work on modern style of fighting. The techniques maybe called differently since the Philippines has many different dialects. All Filipino Martial Arts systems are good and none are better than others. The big difference with the Philippine Combatives™ System is the way lessons are presented and explained and the way the system in built form section to section. We made it easier for people to understand the wonderful and effective world of Filipino Martial Arts by presenting it in easy to follow format and dissectible sections. Making it easier for students to learn and instructors to teach it.

Q: I belong to a different FMA organization; can I still train in Philippine Combatives™ with Philippine Martial Arts Alliance?

A: Yes, Enroll in the PMAA Online University and teach our system to complement your curriculum. We do not require our exclusive online members to attend our events but you may do so for camaraderie if you can or your current organization will allow you to. The only thing we asked is to keep growing the Philippine Martial Arts in your area. Whatever your system is, whatever the Filipino Martial Arts style you teach, PMAA wants to contribute to the overall growth of the Philippine Martial Arts. That is our main goal.
